Stellantis is making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) realm with the introduction of its groundbreaking STLA Large platform, designed to accommodate at least eight distinct vehicles. This versatile platform is not only tailored for EVs but also opens doors for hybrid and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares hails the STLA Large as the most versatile platform in the automotive sector, offering flexibility for various vehicle styles. Expected releases on this platform are the 2025 Dodge Charger Daytona EV and the new Jeep Wagoneer S.
Tavares emphasizes, “Our STLA platforms embody ambitious goals to meet our customers’ evolving needs. Crafting a vehicle family from a meticulously engineered set of components, capable of flexibly covering multiple vehicle types and powertrains, will exceed our iconic brands’ patrons’ expectations.
The platform’s hallmark lies in its adaptability and agility, positioning it as a key driver for success in North America’s shift to electrification.”
Cost-Efficiency through Platform Consolidation
In a strategic move reminiscent of former Ford CEO Alan Mulally’s cost-cutting approach, Stellantis aims to streamline production costs by employing fewer platforms.
Mulally’s philosophy, adopted during his tenure at Ford, highlighted the economic advantages of reducing the number of platforms. This included simplifying tool and die costs, and maintenance expenses, and facilitating production transitions across plants.
The STLA Large Architecture
The cutting-edge STLA Large platform boasts the capability to support batteries delivering a staggering 500-mile EV range, surpassing industry standards where most companies achieve 300-400 mile ranges. Stellantis also promises impressive 0-62 MPH acceleration in approximately 2 seconds.
With compatibility with both 400-volt and 800-volt Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) architectures, the STLA Large platform caters to car, crossover, and SUV vehicles in the D and E segments.
The STLA Large platform is being used by Stellantis to build eight vehicles between 2024 and 2026, beginning with Dodge and Jeep, then Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, and Maserati. The 2025 Dodge Charger Daytona EV and Jeep Wagoneer S are expected to be among the initial releases.
STLA Large as a Performance Powerhouse
Stellantis asserts that the STLA Large platform is engineered to handle extreme power, surpassing existing Hellcat V-8s. The platform offers battery pack options with energy ratings ranging from 85 to 118 kilowatt-hours (kWh), targeting an overall range of 500 miles for sedans.
It is also designed to seamlessly integrate future energy storage technologies as they become production-ready. With fast charging capabilities, up to 4.5 kWh can be added per minute to the 800-volt battery pack. The components support Front-Wheel Drive (FWD), Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), and All-Wheel Drive (AWD) drivetrains.
