Unveiling Dolas eBike’s Defender 250: A Quirky Cargo E-Trike with Unique Features

German mobility startup Dolas eBike has taken an unconventional leap in urban transportation with the debut of its latest creation, the Defender 250. Contrary to the conventional, this e-trike boasts a distinctive design, featuring three powered wheels, robust 4-inch fat tires, an impressive 180-km range, and an astonishing load capacity of 250 kg.

Described by its creators as a bike that “surprises not only with its appearance but also with details that you won’t find on other bikes,” the Defender 250 lives up to its reputation. Its unique setup includes front, middle, and rear wheels, each equipped with a 250-W brushless hub motor, offering pedal-assist up to 25 km/h (15.5 mph) to comply with local e-bike regulations.

The midwheel is intricately connected to the crank, complemented by a Shimano 8-speed gearset. Encased within the 6061 trellis-like frame is a substantial 2,544-Wh battery pack, enabling assisted rides covering up to 180 km (112 miles) on a single charge. The versatile frame design allows for additional features such as a second seat, static handlebar, rear rack, and various accessories to be mounted on the extended top rail.

The e-trike’s patented three-part suspension system is integrated into the novel gliding frame, ensuring continuous monitoring and adjustment for optimal ride quality, comfort, and handling. With 20-inch wheels embraced by 4-inch-wide reinforced fat tires, and disc brakes with a 203-mm rotor at the front and 180-mm rotors in the middle and rear, the Defender 250 promises a unique and efficient riding experience.

Noteworthy features include a 4-inch color LCD display for quick status checks, accompanied by a USB charging port for on-the-go device charging. The moto-style daytime-running LED headlight, encased in IPX6-rated aluminum housing, adds both style and functionality.

Weighing in at 78 kg (172 lb), inclusive of the battery, the Defender 250 is designed to handle a total load of 250 kg (550 lb). Starting at €4,650 (approximately US$5,000), with optional accessories like baskets and crates available, the Defender 250 is currently listed as “coming soon.” The question of its immediate street legality in Europe remains to be answered, adding an air of anticipation to this innovative and peculiar addition to the e-bike market.
